Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS)

The PTLLS qualification satisfies the government requirement for teachers, tutors and trainers to hold an Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector. The course is particularly suitable if you want to be a teacher in a Further Education College, a tutor in an Adult and Community Learning Centre or a trainer for a Learning Provider. It is also for those who need and initial award for their current role as a teacher, tutor or trainer in the Lifelong Learning Sector.

Learning Outcomes

You will gain knowledge and understanding of the teacher's role and approaches to teaching and learning, plan learning sessions and manage learning. The achievement of a Level 3 or Level 4 Award in PTLLS will confirm that you have shown a good understanding of the essential aspects of the teacher/trainer role, can organise and manage effective learning and have developed professionally through on-going reflection and evaluation.

Course Modules

On completion of the one mandatory unit, you will have demonstrated that you are able to:

  • Understand the teacher's role and legislative requirements
  • Understand appropriate teaching and learning approaches
  • Demonstrate session planning skills
  • Deliver and evaluate learning
  • Understand the use of assessment methods and reasons for keeping records of assessment

Career Benefits

A PTLLS helps you take the first step towards becoming a qualified teacher or teaching assistant in the Lifelong Learning Sector.

Teaching Methods

We primarily encourage you to learn through discovery and active practice, rather than being reliant on teachers and textbooks. Tasks are designed to respond to individual learning styles and needs, and we offer constructive feedback acknowledging that making mistakes is a crucial part of effective learning. Resources are available on moodle.

Assessment

The course is formatively assessed to monitor your progress. There are no exams, but you will need to build a portfolio of evidence to show how you meet the assessment criteria. There is a total of five assignments covering the teaching role; teaching and learning approaches; session planning; and delivering inclusive sessions and assessment. You will also have to deliver a minimum of 15 minutes observed micro teaching practice and a further 45 minutes of observing others teach.

Transferrable Skills

You will develop a degree of self-reflection and begin to recognise your own strengths and weaknesses. Key skills such as problem-solving and working with others as well as functional skills in literacy, numeracy and ICT are embedded in the course. All of these are skills that allow you to progress in education, training and employment and make a positive contribution to your community.

Progression

The PTLLS gives you progression onto the CTLLS, provided you meet the other entry criteria.
