‎"People become really quite remarkable when they start thinking that they can do things. When they believe in themselves they have the first secret of success."

When people think of Japan, our minds are often drawn to manga and anime; or perhaps to cult-movies like ‘Ichi the Killer’ and ‘Spirited Away.’ Some of us will think of the marvellous technologies produced by Japanese scientists. Others might think of the extreme street fashions of Harajuku, of cosplay, and of maid cafés. Then there are those who think of the elegant Geishas, the fearsome Samurai, or the mystic Ninjas. There are the busy cities like Tokyo and Osaka, and the relaxing climates of the southern islands.

No other cultures can compare to the extremely contrasted culture of Japan. Everything is taken to extremes, and nothing is as it seems. As a nation, Japan is the geekiest kid on the block - but never underestimate geeks! Japan is proud of how Japanese it is, and we love Japan exactly for what it is. It’s JAPAN!

So, there’s no denying that a lot of wondrous things come out of there but - in all honesty - the most amazing thing to come out of Japan, is the Japanese language.

The Japanese language is spoken by over 130 million people; and that’s only counting the people IN Japan! That makes it the 9th most spoken language in the world. It uses three different scripts, that add up to over 10,000 characters! Luckily, as a student of Japanese, you won’t need to learn more than 3,000 (I know, right?) in order to read and write fluently.

But here’s a small truth; Japanese is actually easier than you might think, and we can prove it.

What we do: our Japanese course will teach you as much about the grammar of Japanese as the practical application of said grammar in music, movies or comics. You can’t learn a new language if it doesn’t interest and stimulate you, and with that in mind, we have designed our course to be flexible and focus on each student’s wants and needs. If your interests lie in sumo-wrestling, we can teach you how to hold a proper conversation about it, and then some! Through any topic of your choice, we can teach you so much more than just a few relevant expressions. We can teach you how to survive in Japan, how to blend in with the cool kids and how to behave in a Japanese household.

Throughout the course, we will integrate you into linguistics, literature, sociolinguistics, as well as pop-culture and tea ceremonies – and we will do our best to successfully introduce you to the different kinds of Japanese (yes, there is more than one type of Japanese!) and of course, our course will prepare you for GCSE’s, A-Levels and even JLPT’s.
